Drainage Solutions

Water follows the shape of the ground. When a yard holds water, the shape is usually the thing that needs to change.

Overview

Drainage work here is grading-driven: reshaping the surface so runoff moves away from structures and off the areas you use, at a speed that does not cause erosion.

Standing water is a symptom. It might be a low spot with no outlet, ground sloping back toward the house, a driveway acting as a dam, or roof runoff concentrated in one place. Each of those calls for a different correction.

The first step is figuring out where water comes from and where it can legitimately go. Once the path is clear, grading, swales and shaped shoulders usually handle the rest.

Common Reasons Property Owners Need This Service

Standing water in the yard

Areas that stay wet for days after rain, kill grass, and stay too soft to use.

Water toward the foundation

Ground sloping the wrong way, which is one of the more urgent problems to correct.

Soggy, unusable low ground

A section of the property that never dries out enough to mow or use.

Runoff crossing a driveway

Water traveling down or across a drive, cutting the surface and carrying gravel with it.

Neighboring runoff

Water arriving from uphill that needs to be intercepted and routed through safely.

What a Project May Involve

  1. 1Walk the property, ideally with knowledge of where water shows up during rain.
  2. 2Identify the source, the low points, and a realistic outlet.
  3. 3Regrade the surface to establish positive slope away from structures.
  4. 4Shape swales or shallow channels to carry water at a controlled speed.
  5. 5Stabilize the disturbed ground so the new shape holds.

Residential Applications

  • • Regrading yards that hold water after rain
  • • Correcting negative slope along foundations and patios
  • • Shaping swales to move runoff to a suitable outlet
  • • Fixing wet spots caused by settling or old construction work

Small Commercial Applications

  • • Small-site surface drainage correction
  • • Grading around gravel lots and access drives to shed water
  • • Reshaping ground where runoff is undercutting a surface

Questions

Drainage Solutions — Questions

Can grading help manage water runoff?
Yes — surface shape determines where water goes. Establishing positive slope and shaping swales solves a large share of yard drainage problems.
Why does water stand in my yard after rain?
Usually a low area without an outlet, or compacted ground that will not absorb water. Both are addressed by reshaping the surface.
Is drainage work the same as installing a French drain?
No. Our work is grading-based surface drainage. Piped systems are a different scope, and we will say so if that is what your property really needs.
How much slope does a yard need to drain?
A consistent fall away from the house is the goal. Small but steady beats steep in one spot and flat everywhere else.
Can drainage be fixed without regrading the whole yard?
Often, yes. Many problems are localized to one low area or one runoff path.
Will fixing drainage stop water in my crawlspace?
Correcting the grade around the structure removes a common source. Existing water intrusion may also need a specialist to evaluate.
